새끼 돼지 돌보는 어미 개 화제

돼지는 개의 '먹잇감'이 되기 마련이다. 하지만 항상 그런 것만은 아니다.

미국 사우스웨스트 플로리다에서 물에 빠진 새끼 돼지들에게 생명줄이 되어

주고 있는 개도 이런 예외적인 경우.

 

농장에 사는 가축들에게 밥 먹는 시간은 아주 일상적인 일이다. 하지만 이 농장의 갓 태어난 새끼 돼지들은 젖을 먹으러 어미 돼지에게 가지 않는다. 대신 로트와일러와 피트 불의 잡종견인 어미 개가 갓 태어난 자신의 새끼 8마리와 함께 새끼 돼지들에게 젖을 준다.

 

농장 주인 짐 파브르의 친구인 엔젤 로만은 “놀랍고 인상적이며 볼만한 장면”이라며 “보기 좋은 모습”이라고 말했다.

파브르는 지난 20일 호우 속에 갓 태어난 새끼 돼지를 구출했다.

 

그는 “당시 새끼 돼지들이 거의 물에 잠겨 있었다”며 “저기 점 있는 새끼 돼지는 물 속에서 얼굴만 내밀고 있었고 숨을 못 쉬어 거의 죽어가고 있었다”고 말했다. 그래서 그는 어미 돼지와 새끼 돼지를 떨어뜨려놔야 했고 그 자체도 힘든

일이었다.

 

파브르는 젖은 새끼 돼지를 말리려고 실내로 데려왔다. 그때 그의 애완견 테킬라가 모성 본능을 발휘했다. 파브르는 “새끼 돼지들이 울자 데킬라가 바로 새끼 돼지들이 배가 고프다는 것을 알고 젖을 물렸다”고 말했다．

 

안젤라 로만은 “보통 개는 돼지를 잡아먹는다”며 “개가 야생에 있었으면 돼지를 사냥했을 것”이라고 말했다. 그는 “그러나 여기선 개가 자기 새끼와 함께 새끼 돼지를 돌보고 있어 마치 구호활동을 하는 것 같다”고 덧붙였다.

 

파브르는 데킬라가 약 1주 동안 새끼 돼지를 돌볼 본 다음 새끼 돼지에게 사료를 먹일 것이라고 말했다.

Pigs are usually a dog's prey - but not always. We found one example right here in Southwest Florida where a dog is serving as a lifeline to a litter of piglets struggling to survive after nearly drowning.

 

Feeding time on the farm is simply business as usual for most animals.

But for the litter of day-old piglets, they aren't going to their birth mother for milk. Instead, a rottweiler-pit bull mix who just gave birth to eight puppies is naturally nursing the little squealers too.

 

"It's amazing, it's awesome. It's good to see though. It's good to see good things in life and this is one of them," said Angel Roman, a friend of the farm's owner Jim Favreau.

 

Farm owner Jim Favreau said he rescued the newborn pigs during Monday's downpour.

 

"The pigs were kind of stuck in the water. That spotted one was stuck all

the way up to his neck and he was losing his air and more or less dying so

I had to fight the mother pig to get the babies away and that was crazy it itself," said Favreau.

 

Favreau brought the piglets inside to dry off. That's when he said his dog Tequilla 's motherly instinct kicked in.

"With the noises they were making and everything, she just knew that they needed feed, so she fed them," Favreau said.

"The dog would normally eat pigs. They would go out and hunt them.

 

That's something that they will do, but here this one is just nursing them along with her puppies so it's like a rescue," Angel Roman said.

 

Favreau said Tequilla will nurse the piglets for about a week. Then he'll start giving them pig feed.
