인생찬가  A Psalm of Life

슬픈 사연으로 내게 말하지 마라,

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
인생은 한낱 허황된 꿈에 지나지 않는다고! 

 Life is but an empty dream!

잠자는 영혼은 죽음이고,

For the soul is dead that slumbers,
만물의 본체는 외양대로만은 아니란다.

And things are not what they seem.

 

인생은 현실! 인생은 진지한 것! 

Life is real! Life is earnest!
무덤이 그 목표는 아니다.

And the grave is not its goal

너는 본래 흙이니,

Dust thou art,
흙으로 돌아가리라,

 to dust returnest,

이것은 영혼을 두고 한말은 아니었다. 

Was not spoken of the soul.

우리가 가야 할 곳, 혹은 가는 길은,

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,

 

향락도 아니고 슬픔도 아니며,

Is our destined end or way
내일의 하루하루가 오늘보다 낫도록 행동하는

But to act, that each to-morrow

그것이 인생이요 길이다.

Find us farther than to-day

예술은 길고 세월은 날아간다,

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,

우리의 심장은 튼튼하고 용감하면서도,

And our hearts, though stout and brave,
마치 감싸진 북과 같이,

Still, like muffled drums, are beating

무덤을 향해 장송곡을 계속 울린다.

Funeral marches to the grave.

이세상 넓은 싸움터에서,

In the world's broad field of battle,

인생의 노영 안에서,

In the bivouac of Life,
말 못하고 쫓기는 짐승이 되지 말고,

 Be not like dumb, driven cattle!

싸움터에 나선 영웅이 되어라! 

Be a hero in the strife!

아무리 즐거울지라도 <미래>를 믿지 말라! 

Trust no future, howe'er pleasant!

죽은 <과거>로 하여금 그 죽음을 묻게 하라! 

 Let the dead Past bury its dead!

활동하라,

Act,

살아 있는 <현재>에 활동하라!

Act in the living present!
가슴속에는 심장이 있고, 머리 위에는 신이 있다! 

Heart within, and God o'erhead!

 

위인들의 모든 생애는 말해 주노니 

Lives of great men all remind us
우리도 장엄한 삶을 이룰 수 있고, 

We can make our lives sublime,

이 세상 떠날 때는 시간의 모래 위에 

And departing, leave behind us
우리 발자국을 남길 수 있음을.. 

Footprints on the sands of time..

 

아마도 후일에 다른 사람이, 

Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
장엄한 삶의 바다를 항해하다가, 

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,

외롭게 난파한 그 어떤 형제가 보고, 

Seeing,

다시금 용기를 얻게 될 발자국을. 

shall take heart again.

 

그러니 우리 이제 일어나서 일하자, 

Let us, then, be up and doing,
어떠한 운명도 이겨낼 정신을 가지고,

With a heart for any fate,

끊임없이 성취하고 추구하면서, 

Still achieving, still pursuing,
일하고 기다리기를 함께 배우자. 

Learn to labor and to wait
