Procter(1825-1864)text The Vocal Majority(05'29) 이 곡은 원래 바리톤솔로를 위한 곡으로 작곡되었고 나중에 합창곡 으로 개작된 곡으로 설리번 자신의 신앙고백적인 내용입니다. 오르가니스트인 작곡가의 곡답게 장중한 느낌을 주는 아름다운 곡입니다. Seated one day at the organ, I was weary and ill at ease, And my fingers wandered idly Over the noisy keys; I know not what I was playing, Or what I was dreaming then, But I struck one chord of music, Like the sound of a great Amen, Like the sound of a great Amen. It flooded the crimson twilight, Like the close of an angel’s psalm, And it lay on my fevered spirit, With a touch of infinite calm, It quieted pain and sorrow, Like love overcoming strife, It seemed the harmonious echo From our discordant life, It linked all the perplexed meanings Into one perfect peace, And trembled away into silence, As if it were loth to cease; I have sought but I seek it vainly, That one lost chord divine, Which came from the soul of the organ, And entered into mine. It may be that death’s bright angel Will speak in that chord again; It may be that only in Heav’n I shall hear that great Amen.   이 마음이 흔들리고 그지없이 외로울때 무심코 거문고(오르간) 줄을 퉁기어 보았네 거문고 가락은 울려 꿈속에서 헤멜때 내가 잃어버린 노래속에 오직 기억함은 주님의 진실한 음성 서쪽 하늘 저녁 노을이 곱게 번지어 가듯이 내 마음 속에 스며드는 주님의 음성을 듣네 슬픔과 탄식은 가고 괴로움 사라지리 어디서 오는 가 따뜻한 영혼의 입김 나 오직 바라는 것은 주님의 음성을 영원한 나라 갈 때 까지 고이 간직하는 것 그 거문고에 울려주는 은은한 가락은 내 마음속에 속삭이는 사랑의 주음성 세상을 떠나 영원한 나라에 가면은 그리던 주의 음성을 나 가까이 듣게네 이 세상을 떠나 영원한 나라에 가면은 그리던 주의 음성을 내가 듣겠네 아멘 아멘 영국 런던에서 태어난 Adelaide Anne Procter는 시인이자 극작가인 Barry Cornwall로 더 잘알려진 Bryan Waller Procter의 딸로 1851년 로마 카톨릭에 다니게 된 후부터 찬송시를 쓰기 시작했습니다. 영국 Lambeth 에서 태어난 Arthur S. Sullivan은  여러해 동안 Proct er의 시를 음악으로 만들었지만 성공하지 못했습니다. 그러나 가장 절친 했던 그의 동생 Fred가 몇 주간 아파하며 죽음을 맞이하면서 그의 슬픔 은 오히려 아름다운 음악으로 승화됩니다. 20세기를 시작하는 시기에 엄청난 인기를 가져온 너무나도 아름다운 곡입니다.
