전 세계 300마리 뿐, 희귀 백사자 출생
Workers at a Colombian circus have welcomed
a rare white lion cub into their troupe.
The new-born cat named "Milagros" (Spanish word for "miracles")
joined the family and the small population of around
300 white lions left in the world.
콜롬비아의 한 서커스단 소속 단원들이 새 식구가 된 희귀 새끼 백사자를 환영했다.
‘밀라그로스(Milagros·스페인어로 ‘기적’이라는 뜻)’라는 이름의 이 새로 태어난
고양잇과 동물은 서커스단과 한 식구가 됐다. 백사자는 전 세계에
약 300마리 정도 밖에 남아있지 않다.
Circus workers in the city of Monteria, some 430 kilometers from the capital Bogota, did not know that Milagros' mother Chiara was pregnant
by her mate Leon XIII.
수도 보고타에서 약 430km 떨어져 있는 도시 몬테리아에 자리 잡고 있는 이 서커스단의
단원들은 밀라그로스의 어미인 치아라(Chiara)가 임신을 했는지 몰랐다고.
밀라그로스의 아빠는 어미 치아라의 친구인 숫사자 레온 13세(Leon XIII)이다.
Her birth came as a pleasant surprise for the German tamer known as Tarzan.
He said the white lion was a very special animal.
밀라그로스의 탄생은 타잔(Tarzan)이라 불리는 독일인 조련사에게 예상치 못한
기쁨이었다. 그는 백사자가 아주 특별한 동물이라고 말했다.
"The important thing now is to raise it because it is a unique animal. We can say that it is the only one in South America. The plan is to raise it so that it can grow up and then we'll see if we can work with it," he said.

“이제 중요한 건 밀라그로스를 기르는 일입니다. 백사자는 아주 특별한 동물로 남아메리카 대륙에는 한 마리 뿐일 겁니다. 우린 밀라그로스가 무럭무럭 자라서 우리와 함께 일할 수 있도록 잘 기를 겁니다.”
Though Milagros' parents both bear yellow fur, the playful cub was born snow-white. Milagros is in good health and is receiving special care.
밀라그로스의 부모는 모두 털 색깔이 노랗지만, 이 장난기 많은 새끼 백사자는 눈처럼 흰 털을 가지고 태어났다. 밀라그로스는 건강한 상태이며, 현재 특별 관리를 받고 있다.
White lions are not albino, but get their coloring due to a recessive gene and have been said to be native to the Timbavati region of South Africa.
백사자는 선천적 색소 결핍증인 알비노는 아니지만, 열성 유전자 때문에 흰색 털을 가지고 태어난다. 백사자의 원산지는 남아프리카 팀바바티 지역인 것으로 알려져 있다.
