주민 600명 중 108명이 쌍둥이, ‘쌍둥이 마을’의 비밀
The village of Mohammedpur Umri in northern India sees scenes from William Shakespeare's comedy of errors playing out on a regular basis owing to an extraordinary number of identical twins born in one location.
인도 북부 우타르프라데시 주(州) 모하메드푸르움리 마을에서는 윌리엄 셰익스피어의 희극 ‘실수 연발(comedy of errors)’에서나 나올 법한 상황이 주기적으로 일어나고 있다. 한 장소에서 놀라울 정도로 많은 일란성쌍둥이가 태어나고 있기 때문이다.
The elders in the village, on the outskirts of the holy town of Allahabad known for the Kumbh mela, say they have over 108 identical twins in the village out of a total population of around 600 --- believed to be much higher than anywhere else in the world.
이 마을은 ‘쿰 메일러’로 유명한 힌두교 성지 알라하바드의 외곽에 자리하고 있다. 마을 어른들은 전체 인구 약 600명 중에 일란성쌍둥이가 108명이 넘는다고 말한다. 세상 그 어디보다 쌍둥이 출생률이 높은 마을인 셈이다.

Even though the road leading to the village is muddy and pot holed and the village has no real health centre and just one school, the locals still revel in their proud record and narrate incidents of mistaken identities to the bemused visitors.
마을로 향하는 길은 진흙탕에 도로 곳곳은 패여 있고 보건소 하나 제대로 없는데다 학교는 단 한 군데뿐이지만 높은 쌍둥이 출생률이 자랑스럽기만 한 마을 주민들은 헷갈려 하는 외부인들에게 쌍둥이를 혼동해서 빚어진 일화들을 들려준다.
Even the animals in village have been documented to give birth to twins.
심지어 이 마을에서는 동물도 쌍둥이를 낳았다는 기록이 있다.
"Within the last 25 to 30 years a lot of twins were born in this village. At least 108 twins can be found right now in this village. There are also many cows in this village that have given birth to twin calves," said Mohammad Mustafa, a local and father of twin sons on Tuesday (April 16).

“최근 25-30년 사이에 이 마을에서 쌍둥이가 많이 태어났습니다. 현재 이 마을에는 쌍둥이가 최소 108명 있습니다. 이 마을에는 쌍둥이를 낳은 소도 많습니다.”
This fascinating phenomenon of twin births is confined to the Umri village as the adjacent villages and hamlets with similar population and geography have not seen a similar twin boom.
이러한 흥미로운 현상은 움리 마을에만 국한된 것이다. 인구수와 지리적 특성이 비슷한 인접 마을과 촌락에서는 쌍둥이 출생률이 이 마을과 같이 특별히 높거나 하지 않다.
Villagers are full of stories replete with incidents of mistaken identities where one child gets spanked for the pranks played by his or her identical sibling.
마을 사람들은 장난친 아이를 구별 못 해 다른 아이가 대신 볼기를 맞았다든가 하는 쌍둥이를 혼동해서 빚어진 사건들에 대해 할 얘기가 넘쳐 난다.
Locals said that many genetic researchers from across the world have come to the village in the hope of finding the reason behind this unique phenomenon.
지역 주민들은 세계 각지에서 많은 유전학자들이 이러한 독특한 현상의 원인을 알아낼 수 있지 않을까 하는 기대를 품고 이 마을을 찾았다고 말했다.
"All the twins in this village are a result of natural birth. There are many villages alongside this one, but they don't have twins in them, then why just in Umri do we find so many twins? Many experts have come to this village, some even came from Hyderabad, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was Prime Minister. They took samples of the soil in the village, water in the village and our blood samples to research. But they are yet to find an answer," said Mohammad Hasan another local and one of the twins in the village.

“이 마을의 모든 쌍둥이들이 자연 출산으로 태어났습니다. 이 마을 주변에 많은 마을들이 있습니다. 하지만 쌍둥이가 많지는 않아요. 왜 움리 마을에서만 이렇게 많은 쌍둥이가 태어나는 걸까요? 많은 전문가들이 이 마을을 찾았고 아탈 비하리 바지파이가 총리였을 당시에 하이데라바드에서도 왔었어요. 그들은 연구를 위해 마을의 토양, 수질, 혈액 시료를 채취해 갔어요. 하지만 아직 답을 알아내지 못했어요.”
There is rarely a dull day in the village of Umri as someone always become a victim of a twin prank.
움리 마을은 조용한 날이 잘 없다. 누군가는 항상 쌍둥이 장난의 희생양이 되기 때문이다.
Tales of Shakespeare's comedy of errors often find a real narrative in the village where locals narrate stories of a twin brother taking a loan from the local money lender and then refusing to pay it back by claiming that the other twin had taken the loan.
이 마을에서는 종종 셰익스피어의 희극 ‘실수 연발’ 속 일화보다 훨씬 더 흥미진진한 사건이 전개된다. 지역 주민들은 쌍둥이 형제 중에 한 명이 대금업자에게 돈을 빌리고는 대출받은 건 자신의 쌍둥이라고 우기면서 돈을 갚지 않으려고 한 일화를 들려준다.
Wives in the village have asked their husbands to dress in a particular manner so that they can differentiate them from their twin brother.
마을의 부녀자들은 남편들에게 쌍둥이 시숙과 헷갈리지 않게 정해 놓은 옷차림을 하라고 요청한다.
In a bizarre incident, a set of twin brothers even switched places inside prison. They would wear identical clothing and the other would just walk out of the police station.
한 웃지 못할 사건에서는 쌍둥이 형제가 유치장 신세를 맞교대하기도 했다. 둘이 똑같은 옷을 입고는 유치장 안에 있던 쌍둥이가 경찰서를 빠져나간 것이다.
As scientists try to find the reason for the large numbers of twins in the village, the parents are busy trying to tell their children apart. It doesn't help that many of the twins have similar names and often wear similar clothes.
과학자들이 이 마을의 쌍둥이 출생률이 유난히 높은 이유를 밝혀내려고 애쓰는 가운데 쌍둥이를 둔 부모들은 자녀들에게 떨어져 있으라고 말하기 바쁘다. 이름을 비슷하게 짓고 옷도 비슷하게 입히는 건 쌍둥이 분간을 더 어렵게 만든다.
