A leopard strayed into a village in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, injuring eight people as villagers and forest guards tried to tame the wild cat on Monday (April 25).
인도 동부 서(西)벵골 주(州)의 한 마을에 표범 한 마리가 침입했다. 25일(현지시간) 주민과 삼림 경비원들이 나서 이 야생 표범을 붙잡으려다 8명이 다쳤다.
The leopard sneaked into the fields close to the forest in Siliguri district of West Bengal and attacked a farm owner and his wife.
이 표범은 서벵골 실리구리 지역 숲 인근의 밭에 몰래 들어가 밭 소유주와 그의 부인을 공격했다.

Sinazul Islam, one of the locals, said the big cat attacked one of the farmers and his wife when the couple arrived in their field to work in the early morning.
주민 시나줄 이슬람 씨는 “커다란 고양잇과 동물인 표범이 이른 아침 일을 하기 위해 밭에 나온 농부 중 한 명과
그의 부인을 공격했다”라고 말했다.
"Eight people have been injured as far as we have seen. Five from the forest department and the three are villagers. The owner of the field and his wife, who had come to the field to work, were the first to be attacked by the leopard," said Islam.

“우리가 본 것만 해도 8명이 다쳤다. 부상자는 삼림당국 직원 5명과 주민 3명이다. 일을 하러 밭에 나왔던 밭 주인과 그의 부인이 표범에게 가장 먼저 공격을 받았다.”
Baton wielding villagers and forest guards with rifles were trying to nab the leopard which was still at large.
방망이를 든 주민들과 소총을 든 삼림 경비원들이 표범을 붙잡기 위해 노력했으나, 아직 잡지 못했다.
Niranjita Mitra, Assistant Wildlife Warden of Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary said the forest officials were still trying to capture the stray animal.
잘다파라 야생생물 보호구역의 부관리인 니란지타 미트라 씨는 떠돌고 있는 표범을 잡기 위해 삼림 당국이 애를 쓰고 있다고 말했다.
"In the morning a leopard strayed out of the forest and came in the village and kept hiding in the betel leaves field. We are trying to capture it since morning. Three villagers and five forest officials have been injured," said Mitra.

“아침에 표범 한 마리가 숲에서 나와 마을로 들어왔으며, 구장나무 잎을 재배하는 밭에 모습을 숨겼다. 우린 아침부터 표범을 잡기 위해 노력하고 있다. 이 표범의 공격으로 주민 3명과 삼림당국 직원 5명이 다쳤다.”

Mitra said they had also brought in two elephants from an adjacent wildlife sanctuary to get closer to the leopard and try and tranquilise it.

In an increasing sign of man-animal conflict triggered by rapid urbanisation, wild animals like leopards, tigers and elephants often stray into human settlements, sometime causing havoc.
급속한 도시화로 인해 인간과 동물이 충돌하는 사례가 늘어나면서 표범, 호랑이, 코끼리와 같은 야생 동물들이 인간의 주거지를
침범하고 있으며, 간혹 큰 혼란을 일으키기도 한다.
Recently India's Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said new guidelines have been issued to different states to deal with the complex issue of man-animal conflict.
최근 자이람 라메쉬 인도 환경부 장관은 ‘인간과 동물의 충돌’과 관련한 복잡한 문제를 해결하기 위해 여러 주(州)에서 새로운 지침들이 발표됐다고 밝혔다.
