Five out-of-season ice cave groups have been discovered in succession in the Yunqiu Mountain of Xiangning County in North China's Shanxi Province.
최근 중국 북부 산시성(山西省) 샹닝(鄕寧)현에 위치한 윈추산에서 겨울이 아닌 시기에 얼음이 어는 동굴 5개가 잇달아 발견됐다.
They have been identified as the largest group of ice caves ever discovered in China, according to the Institute of Geology and Geophysics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences after textual research.
중국과학원 산하 지질학·지구물리학 연구소가 참고 원문을 조사한 결과 이 동굴들은 지금까지 중국에서 발견된 얼음동굴 가운데 가장 큰 규모라고 한다.
People could shudder at the entrance to one of the natural out-of-season ice caves even when the outdoor temperature is over 22 degrees centigrade. Thick ice froze inside the cave, with many icicles on the ceiling of the cave, making a striking contrast with the green vegetation outside.
제철이 아닌 때 얼음이 어는 자연 동굴 중 한 곳의 입구에 다다르면 밖의 기온이 섭씨 22도 이상임에도 불구하고 추위에 몸을 떨게 된다. 동굴 내부의 두꺼운 얼음 덩어리와 천장에 매달린 수많은 고드름들이 동굴 밖의 푸른 초목과 극명한 대조를 이루고 있다.
Five groups of ice caves like this have been discovered in an area of 35 square kilometers at the Yunqiu Mountain, the largest of its kind ever discovered in China.
윈추산의 35km²에 이르는 지역에서 발견된 5개의 얼음동굴은 지금까지 중국에서 발견된 얼음동굴 가운데 가장 큰 규모이다.
According to Chen Shicai, researcher of the CAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics, only about one in every 10,000 caves in China is ice cave. So the ice cave groups are rather a miracle.
중국과학원 지질학·지구물리학 연구소의 천 스차이 연구원에 의하면 얼음동굴은 중국의 동굴 1만 개당 한 개 꼴이라고 한다. 따라서 이번에 발견된 ‘무더기 얼음동굴’은 거의 기적에 가까운 일이다.
Then they are out of season, which means ice doesn't freeze in these caves in the coldest season but it begins to freeze in March, and reaches the thickest in May, when it begins to melt little by little, till it freezes again next March.
이 동굴들이 제철이 아닌때 얼음이 언다고 하는 의미는 가장 추운 계절에 얼음이 얼지 않는다는 뜻이다. 이 동굴 안에서 얼음은 3월에 얼기 시작해 5월에 가장 두꺼워진다. 이후 다시 얼음이 얼기 시작하는 이듬해 3월까지 서서히 녹는다.
The most prominent of them is they are in groups, Chen said, scattering in different valleys in the mountain area.
이 얼음동굴들의 가장 중요한 특징은 집단으로 이뤄진 점이라고 천 스차이 연구원은 말했다. 산악지대에서는 보통 여러 계곡에 흩어져 있는게 일반적이라고 한다.
"It is also amazing that the ice caves have their ventilation, with not only ice but also cold wind of low temperature, at 2 to 4 degrees centigrade, coming out of some of them," said Chen.
“이 얼음동굴들에 있어 또 하나 놀라운 점은 바로 환기가 된다는 점이다. 동굴들의 일부에서 얼음 뿐만 아니라 섭씨 2~4도의 낮은 온도의 차가운 공기가 밖으로 나오고 있다”라고 천 스차이 연구원은 말했다.
The ice cave groups would be developed into a natural scenic spot in one year, adding to the other 50 of the Yunqiu Mountain tourist site, which also claims more than 30 cultural heritage sites.
이 ‘무더기 얼음동굴’은 향후 1년 내에 명승지로 지정돼 개발될 것으로 보인다. 여기에 현재 50곳에 이르는 윈추산 관광지로도, 또 30곳이 넘는 문화 유적지에도 새로 이름을 올릴 수도 있다.
